Trip's 2021 Writing Prompt Challenge

Prompts: picture prompts only, I need that kind of help.
Frequency: daily...or so I'm gonna try!
Format: Drabble (but if I go over 100 words then no one has to know...)

January 1st

"So here we are," said Uncle Steven. He let down two large bags of luggage that spilled out winter clothes and hot water bags. "Great White Mountains, hours away from home, two beer fridges, and we even got wifi last year."

"But no beer," I said.

"Huh?"

"You didn't have anything else in the trunk."

"Oh dangit Elsie..."

January 2nd

And while almost as naked as he was born, he leaned down to kiss the slimy creature on its rubbery lips. Not to mention how the frog dripped with whatever water was running in the town's fountain. At least the frat would...

"Student Rights here, that's hazing."

Not a chance! Wasn't it just good fun and...

"Campus Police, definitely hazing."

Well, why would anyone kiss a frog if not for some good fun and initiation?

"Hey, this is your mum." He took a phone call. "I told you you never had to get anyone else's approval."

That settled it!

January 3rd

Painting is what turns thoughts into images and obsessions into ideas. But when I show others, I keep it a secret. It's a character. It's just strokes on a canvas. It's...

...not that girl. It's no one I've ever met before. It's no one I'm attracted to and no one who ever came and left.

She didn't leave any canvases or brushes here. Her expensive oil paints left with her, didn't they? Her soiled painter's tarp and smock don't hang on my door.

And I definitely didn't don them to paint her.

January 4th

Fielding questions from a child is so difficult, and there's so much to ask about a new house. Just talk to my realtor!

"Where's my bedroom?" She asked it five times on the way there. It's in the back and far away from mum and dad's. You always say we snore anyways.

"Will we get a TV?" Already there!

"Will we get a computer?" One day! Next few paychecks, I promise.

"Will we get another dog since we have a yard now?" Absolutely not!

"But why the second dog house?" Dangit Fiona, you got me there...

January 5th (call me ambitious)

It was a lovely new house. Cheesy 70's wallpaper, two floors, room for a family, but just enough bedrooms to attract the enemy. A marriage ruiner. The in-laws. At first only two were agreed upon to live there, after the newlyweds screamed in a hotel room about it.

But then Donna walked in. Her perfect french braids stiffly behind her back as she judged the exterior.

"You should've had the previous owner fix this up first. Someone's gonna fall through the floorboards."

"Don't you think I've already tried?" cried the husband. How much longer would she live for anyways?

January 6th

"Mum! They let us out of school early."

"Don't tell me that they made you watch the news too." Every generation had their scares. Yusun's was the Challenger Explosion when she was a little girl. One of the astronauts was a teacher just like her own mum. There was a lot every parent had to explain. The barrage of questions like what's a terrorist? and the ever-present why?

"So your other grandma moved in," said Yusun. "Why don't you ask her?"

January 7th

"Listen, you are always welcome at our house, even to stay over..." Bronson's college BFF Yinelis would always be there for him. And while he and Yusun finally had their house, she never found the footing to get her own. Call it a bad market, or her medical receptionist job never paying well. They didn't even give her hazard pay in times of crisis, with patients coughing on her face.

But she loved wandering around Bronson's house in pajamas and found the door to his bedroom, scaring him while he slept in on a personal day.

"...but everyday wear only now, okay? Even sweatpants will do."
