The Quest for the Beanstalk

Post by Sam »

Back in 2014 I set myself a challenge in TS1, of achieving something I had only read about in wikis - climbing the beanstalk that came with Makin' Magic. It was a magical item you had to earn, and until 2014, I had no idea it was anything more than decorative.

You'll find links to the two parts of my quest below. It's not really a 'story' as such, but I thought people might find it interesting - it was definitely one of my favourite things I've ever done with the sims!

This was SO MUCH fun! I had Sims 1 back in high school, but my brother lost all the disks (somehow?) so I stopped playing until Sims 2 came out, so I never got to experience Makin' Magic. I've thought a few times about trying to get my hands on a copy but they're pretty expensive now and like you said, a lot of work to get working. Anyway, thank you for sharing this! I had no idea what the ending would be but the nostalgia and the surprise were so worth it! :D

@Taube: im pretty sure theres a collector edition on origin with all the expansions. Then you dont have to worry about the hassle of discs and stuff

Edit: I lied. It's not on there anymore. I just checked :(

Thanks! Every time I see TS1 posts it makes me want to open it up again!

sueplayssims:
Glad you enjoyed it! It feels a bit like completing a game, in a way!

108sims:
Thanks! It's made me want to go back and play more TS1 :D

Taube:
Makin' Magic was my first expansion pack, and is my all-time favourite sims game. The installation process takes aaaages, and mine crashes on my laptop if I use a screen-capping programme. The first sims games often turn up in second hand shops here, otherwise maybe look on ebay? I was adamant that I wanted to keep my original discs, so I still have all of mine!

nooboostar:
She did have a rough time of it, unfortunately :(
I'm not actually sure! I think they'd turn up on regular lots, as the beanstalk originally turned up on a regular lot, so it's possible?

Thanks guys! It has been great revisiting sims 1 with you all <3

Omg, I could barely remember this game and how awesome it was! I remember I barely played with Magic back in the day, but this certainly makes me want to go back now! It was really fun to see! Thanks for sharing!

Oh my god love it. Like everyone else I don't think (or remember if I got to the giant) either. It looked like so much fun. Time to have look to see if any sims 1 games are around. Brought back a lot of good memories. :)

This is extremely cool. I think I need to find my discs somewhere and play, I never could be bothered to farm the coins needed when I was in middle school.

Best hidden feature ever, I'd say :D Definitely worth opening the game again if possible - I'm so glad I kept my original discs!

I think I maybe moved one family to Magic Town when I was younger? It seemed like so much effort back then :D

Thanks, guys! It's been great hearing how this little bit of gameplay has brought nostalgia and happy memories back for so many of you :)

Wow Sam, thanks for posting that.

It was very nostalgic. I never got Makin' Magic for 1. I had most of the expansions up to that one but I had started losing interest, but I didn't know there was SO MUCH TO DO!!!

The beans are hilarious, and I love that that's the giant. It does feel like a bit of an end. How cool! I'm so glad you shared, I still have all the TS1 disks I had previously, but since I didn't have makin' magic I would have to find that. Still, it was really fun to have someone play it and share!

This was fun! Makin' Magic was my favorite expansion pack, as well! And I never made it to the top of a beanstalk, either. Now I have to crank up my game and try it.

I recently got the collection (because I 'lent' my disks out and they were lost/destroyed. Waaah! But I got it to work, after several days of google-searching), and when I played it again, I realized that Sims 1 was a lot more challenging than I remembered. People don't give it enough credit. Also, if you want to advance in a career, you REALLY need one person at home, making the friends and keeping house. Single sims suffer in Sims.

It's nice to see stories posted on here, though! Hooray!

Climbing the beanstalk feels like such an early 2000s gaming forum rumor. Feels like you found Mew under the truck.

Also "That's the reason I started building the gnome army in the first place," may be my favorite sentence ever.
