Wildewood - A Medieval Charter Challenge, updated 10/24

Post by Marnie »

Hello, everyone, and welcome to my record of the Medieval Charter Challenge. I've summed it up on my Wordpress blog, but the basics of the challenge is that it's a medieval themed BACC with social climbing and collective lot improvement. It took a while to set it all up, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

The goal of the challenge is to become a charter city with a king for your castle, reached when the town treasury reaches 100k! Along the way, you build community lots and improvements when you reach money milestones and add CAS families as your city grows.

Here's the pitch from the actual document:
Your goal is to take a small and struggling Settlement and build it up into a thriving Medieval Charter City. In the process, you will use the High Middle Ages qualities of Self-Sufficiency and Common Enterprise to:
Build a flourishing medieval Society structure from the Peasantry up
Establish Guilds and a thriving market economy
Develop Science, Medicine, Culture and The Arts in your City
Through accomplishing these three goals you will earn a Charter for your city and crown a Monarch. A Charter City is allowed certain rights and privileges, granted by the King.

Medieval City Charter:
  • Lower taxes on citizens and lower duties on Merchants’ imports
  • A City Council, Lord Mayor and Law Courts
  • Peasants living within the city and self-supporting for a year and a day become freemen and may enter the Yeomanry
  • The City is free from all obligations to feudal lords, and is now directly subject to the king
  • You may now add your new Crowned Monarch and Castle!
Goals Reached!

I wonder how this differs from the Royal Kingdom challenge, guess I'll find out!
Spoiler:
Whatever lighting mods you are using look amazing! The setting looks positively medieval, I can't imagine all the time it must have taken to set this up.

Yeah reloading after the fire is definitely for the best, since no fire brigade and I'm not sure there are extinguishers in your mod. :headache:

Excited for this! I love historical gameplay. Can't wait to continue exploring your challenge to be inspired for my own gameplay. I normally do 19th century...but love a good peruse into the medieval and early modern period :)

I think the major difference between the MCC and the Royal Kingdom challenge is that you build your way up to a Royal family. But it's pretty similar otherwise. :)
Spoiler:
Thank you for the feedback on the lighting mod! I use Gunmod's Radiance Light System, and I think it really works for a historical game. It took me a few weeks to put all the CC together, and I'm still working out all the kinks! (Grim might be showing up as a headless woman in a shirt right now  )

Thank you! If you really want to be inspired, I suggest taking a look at With Love from Ayre, another MCC that greatly inspired me. It's gorgeous!

You know, as I continue to read, your game's aesthetic reminds me very much of Dragon Age. It's pleasing. ^^
Spoiler:
And I am loving the aura of mystery and death that's breeding in Wildewood so far. Very representative of the medieval life in general, given how common random deaths were.

And I liked what you referred to as "hog farming" :haha:

Thanks for the compliment. I love Dragon Age. Origins is still one of my favorite RPGs of all time!
Spoiler:
I'm trying to weave in some supernatural elements instead of just making it 100% realistic. Also, fun fact, Stanley actually is a hog farmer! Though what they were talking about probably spoils his intentions...
Alright! Two updates for you in the OP. :)

Spoiler:
The beekeeper seems to have an intriguing start to his story. I'm still just in awe of all the pretty looking CC you've got. And that sucked about his business not having customers, at least you figured out the problem. So I forget but, are there any townies in this hood?

Spoiler:
There aren't any townies other than the good grand witch and the service NPCs, according to challenge rules! A good place to find medieval CC is Plumbob Keep, if you're interested. Thank you for your kind words. :)
Here's two more updates for everyone. Thank you for your patience!

I like how the Beer(Biermann) family are the ones who will run the tavern. :slaphappy:

Very nice looking pictures as usual.

Last update of Spring! We're officially a hamlet now and can add two new families - a Merchant and a third Yeoman.

Spoiler:
I like how Edric was just able to "trick" the Steward. :slaphappy:

Are those sheep real animals or act as objects? Either way, cute!

The town's growing steadily but surely. ^^

Nice update! ^^
Spoiler:
Poor James, the transition to married life is rarely easy for romancers. But alas, it's hard to avoid being married in a medieval town(unless you are clergy of course).

Spoiler:
I don't think James would've liked being a clergyman either. ;) Unless he was a priest of the Songbird... I think his marriage worked out just about as well as it could've. At least he and his bride are in love. That was really surprising!
